In Rivers State, Nigeria, political tensions have escalated dramatically as Governor Siminalayi Fubara confronts a potential impeachment orchestrated by a faction within the State House of Assembly. This faction is reportedly allied with former Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The discord began when Governor Fubara allegedly sidelined 27 out of the 32 Assembly members, choosing instead to govern with the support of only five legislators loyal to him. This move led to a significant rift within the state's legislative body, with the majority faction feeling marginalized and seeking redress.

The situation attracted judicial attention, culminating in a Supreme Court ruling that mandated Governor Fubara to recognize all 32 elected Assembly members. The court criticized the governor's actions, stating that his "fear of impeachment by the House Assembly is no justification for his attacks on the House of Assembly, the Constitution, the Government of Rivers State, and rule of law."

Tensions escalated when Governor Fubara attempted to present the 2025 budget to the Assembly but was denied access to the Assembly Complex. This unprecedented action underscored the deepening rift between the executive and legislative branches in the state.

Former Governor Nyesom Wike publicly endorsed the impeachment efforts, asserting that "heavens won't fall if Fubara is impeached." This endorsement has further polarized opinions within the state. In contrast, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) and other regional groups have warned against such actions, suggesting that impeaching Governor Fubara could lead to significant economic and social repercussions for the state.

Amid the turmoil, the Rivers State House of Assembly has adjourned indefinitely, leaving the state's governance in a precarious position. Governor Fubara's attempts to comply with the Supreme Court's directives by presenting the budget have been thwarted, exacerbating the political impasse.

The unfolding events in Rivers State highlight a complex power struggle with potential implications for the state's stability and governance. As the situation develops, stakeholders and observers alike are keenly watching for resolutions that uphold democratic principles and ensure the well-being of the state's populace.
